NVIDIA launches EGX platform to Bring Real-Time AI to IoT Edge Devices

NVIDIA recently announced NVIDIA EGX platform enabling consumers to carry out low-latency AI tasks at the edge.

Generally, tasks that demand AI processing at the edge are to understand and act immediately on continuous streaming data among 5G base stations, warehouses, retail stores, factories and almost any firm using their 5G data.

The purpose of NVIDIA EGX is to meet the increasing demand to perform instantaneous high-throughput AI at the edge — where data is created – with guaranteed response times while reducing the amount of data that must be sent to the cloud.

The announcement said that NVIDIA and Red Hat to integrate and optimize NVIDIA Edge Stack with OpenShift, the leading enterprise-grade Kubernetes container orchestration platform. At the same time, tiny NVIDIA Jetson Nano which is part of NVIDIA EGX can perform one-half trillion operations per second (TOPS) for tasks such as image recognition

It is estimated that until the year 2025, 150 billion machine sensors and IoT devices will stream continuous 5G data. The order of magnitude of data processed will be more than the data produced today by smartphones. NVIDIA EGX edge servers will be distributed globally to process data in real time using these sensors, says the announcement.

Executive Opinion

Vice president and general manager of Enterprise and Edge Computing at NVIDIA, Bob Pette said, “Enterprises demand more powerful computing at the edge to process their oceans of raw data — streaming in from countless interactions with customers and facilities — to make rapid, AI-enhanced decisions that can drive their business. A scalable platform like NVIDIA EGX allows them to easily deploy systems to meet their needs on premises, in the cloud or both.”

Director of Azure IoT Edge said Sam George, “Azure IoT Edge helps customers deploy cloud service to their IoT devices quickly and securely. We look forward to supporting NVIDIA’s EGX edge platform on Azure IoT Edge devices so that customers can deploy AI workloads targeting EGX-compatible hardware.”

Supported by 40+ Organizations

NVIDIA EGX has been adopted by more than 40 industry-leading organizations and companies. Among them are BMW Group Logistics, Foxconn, GE Healthcare, Harvard Medical School and many more.

EGX also brings NVIDIA's AI technologies with Red Hat OpenShift and NVIDIA Edge Stack together with Mellanox and Cisco security, networking and storage technologies.
