IBM and IISc, India to set up AI & Hybrid Cloud innovation Lab at IISc Bangalore Campus

IBM

IBM has now collaborated with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to launch an innovation lab for advanced research in hybrid cloud technologies.

The lab, which is known by the name as IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud Lab, will be located on campus at IISc in Bangalore, India

The engagement will drive a broader open source community to foster wider adoption of solutions. One of the objectives of the partnership will be to build an autonomous system that cans self-heal by diagnosing and heading faults and misconfigurations. The collaboration will adopt microservices to use cloud-native technologies such as serverless and Kubernetes to bring agility into processes.

Executive Opinion

Gargi Dasgupta, Director, IBM Research India said, "The IBM - IISc lab will bring together two leading research organizations in industry and academia to create an ecosystem for Hybrid Cloud research, in India, for India and the world. IISc has a strong record in research areas like Hybrid Cloud, AI, Security, which compliments the expertise of IBM Research, and we are excited to collaborate with IISc to create innovative, industry relevant solutions. Our Hybrid Cloud platform is Open, and we will jointly develop open-source software that provides interoperability, portability, and security that can be easily accessible to the vast community of developers to accelerate innovation."

Navakanta Bhat, Dean, Division of Interdisciplinary Sciences, IISc Bengaluru said,"IISc is very grateful to IBM for partnering with us on this ambitious initiative to establish this state-of-the-art lab on campus. We are particularly excited about making the joint research findings open source and accessible to a wide community which will significantly accelerate innovation in the emerging areas of AI and Hybrid Cloud. Such industry-academia partnerships are key to boosting the impact of research, and we are proud to work together with a technology leader like IBM."

IBM and IISc collaboration

The students and faculty from multiple IISc departments work alongside IBM research scientists in the newly proposed innovation lab. The research is targeted towards increasing hybrid cloud adoption.

The lab will begin with an initial set of projects which involve IBM Research Lab’s scientists and the departments of computational and data sciences, supercomputing education and research center, computer science, and automation from IISc

The two entities also intend to create an AI information management system that can enable organizations to gather insights from the edge, on-premises, and cloud data source, notes the announcement.

Apart from that, AI systems will be developed that can analyze human and machine languages to build optimized computing systems. IBM said that the lab would also present its research findings at premier conferences, hosting workshops, and will continue to release open-source tools or materials to the community.
